IEC 60601The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was started June 1906 in London UK. The IEC is the leading global organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. These serve as a basis for national standardization and as references when drafting international tenders and contracts. The IEC 60601 is a standard for medical electrical equipment. The second edition of this standard was published by Technical Committee (TC) 62 of the IEC in 1988. Although there are other national medical standards, the IEC 60601 is the governing standard for electrical medical products. The IEC 60601 standards series consists of four distinct parts. The IEC 60601-1 base standard is the core of the series and a part of the 60601–1 grouping (base and collateral). The 60601–2 grouping includes particular device-specific standards, and the 60601–3 grouping includes performance and device-specific standards. In North America, the IEC 60601 is facilitated by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Sections of the code can be found at http://60601-1.com/documents.htm
