Initial Project Definition
Background
SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, is a problem that every parent has to worry about. Although the exact cause isn't known, SIDS is used to cover any case where an infant is found dead in thier crib, without any prior warning. Presently, thier are monitors avialable by prescription, but these monitors are very expensive, involve wires running into the crib connected to electrodes on the babies skin. This solution is costly, and only employed in infants that are known to have respitory or other problems. Project Outcomes By Spring of 2007, the sleepsound team will create a low cost, non perscription baby monitoring system that will be capable of detecting SIDS events. These events are either 1) Ceasation of, or unsteady Respitory function, or 2) Ceasation of/or unsteady Cardiac patterns. This solution will be entirely crib safe, child friendly, and baby safe for everyday use. This monitor should be able to be manufactured, and sold in stores across the country for under 300$.

Project Needs The following is a basic set of needs we've found for our project 1. Cost -Affordable, keep in mind the difference between manufacturing price and retail price. Also component cost. -Affordable replacement parts. 2. Safety -Must comply with the IEC 60601-1 standards -Low voltage -No sharp edges -No wires for the infant to become entangled in -Must be crib safe -Must not be a swallow hazard -Must be composed of bio compatible materials 3. Functionality - Simple interface to operate - No instruction book needed. - Easy to clean - Easy to reassemble - Detects when breathing stops as well as troubled breathing. - Detects heart rate - Provides feedback about which sensor set off the alarm. - User must have the ability to turn off the alarm. - Has ability to record and present alarm history. 4. Reliability - No false alarms - Low battery indicator - No false negatives - Redundancy measurement |
