Sleep Sound

September 21st Meeting Minutes

I.  Introductions.

A.  Dale has been working at INL for 20 years and is currently the manager of the INL project engineering team.

II.  Information from Dale.

A.  Specifications

1.  The $300 market price is somewhat flexible.
2.  The monitor should be easy to use and should run by itself.
3.  The monitor must allow for movement.
4.  SIDS occurs primarily in cribs or other sleeping apparatuses.  So the monitor should be designed accordingly.
5.  The monitor must detect when the infant has stopped breathing.

B.  Client Knowledge

1. Dale is not too familiar with SIDS.
2.  His biggest research suggestions include talking to doctors who have prescribed pre-existing SIDS monitors as well as parents who have used SIDS monitors.
3.  Our device must not attach to the infant in any way that will hinder its ability to move or breathe.  It must not irritate the skin.
4.  The device needs to be found on the shelf, not prescribed.

C.  Miscellaneous.

1.  If our design is a success, another project may be conducted to fine tune the design.  It would then be presented to Batelle and possibly put into production.

D.  General Design Ideas

1.  Pressure sensitive mattress.
2.  Check pg 23 of  #___ issue of _____ magazine. (can someone fill in the blanks?) for an article on pressure sensors.
3.  Motion sensor to pick up chest movement.
4.  Sensitive C02 sensor.

III.  Requests from Dale
