Point of Waveform Closure

Final Product

Team Rush's final product consists of 3 power electronic switches. The switches used are called silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). Which are controled by 3 PSoC microprocessors. One for each phase. The SCR's are gated using an single phase Enerpro firing board, there are also 3 of these boards one for each phase. Ten cycles after the SCR's have been enabled a mechanical contactor enables. This contactor is used for the steady state conduction for the load.

The PSoc is capable of energizing at any point in the voltage waveform with little to no delay. Below are a few diagrams that we received energizing the three phases of a transformer at 0°, 90°, and 180°.

0° for each phase

0 cross

90° for each phase

90 cross

180° for each phase

180 cross

The next two graphs show the best and worst place to energize a three phase transformer. During energization of transformers current inrush will occur. To minimize the size of this inrush, depends on where you switch in on the voltage waveform. The worst case are located at the zero crossing's either at 0°, or 180° . While the best place to switch in are at the peaks of the waveform 90°, or 270°. Below are two diagrams that illustrate the worst and best place to switch in a three phase transformer.
