PROTOTYPE EACH COMPONENT AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE:

Early prototyping of each component would have enabled the team to take care design issues and reiterate to solve problems.    In the case of this design early prototyping would have helped resolve issues with all three cutting operations, the cross cutter, spud cutters, and longitudinal cutters.

SCALE PROJECT DOWN TO A MANAGEABLE SIZE IN THE BEGINNING:

After dealing with the size and complexity of this project it seems that if we had focused on developing a machine that was a little bit more manageable in size would have been really helpful.   When machines are full size they have a tendency to become cumbersome.   Instead of trimming a full 60 inch panel Team Lean Trimmer may have been better off trimming a panel that was 30 inches instead.   It might also be helpful to focus on the most complex profile.   Which in our case would have been the Dash-2 panel.   If we were to do this again we would try to negotiate with the customer on scaling the project down.

DON'T LET THE BUDGET COMPLETELY DICTATE CONSTRUCTION METHODS:

In many cases the budget was little tight in order to accommodate this some inferior components were used which caused much unwanted grief in the end.   This kind of reflects back to scaling down the project to a manageable size.  It would be a good idea next time to scale project to fit comfortable to budget.

COMPLETE DRAWING PACKAGES AS DESIGN PROGRESSES:

Have a complete drawing package as machine progresses through the design process.  This would have allowed others to see possible problem with design and hopefully allow them to give insight in ways to solve issue.

SET UP DISCIPLINARY ACTION FOR NON-ATTENDANCE TO TEAM ACTIVITIES AND LACK OF CONTRIBUTION:

Even though Team Lean Trimmers had no problem getting along with on another; there still existed, situations in which members didn't show up promptly or were not able to complete assigned work.  On a big project it is essential that all members meet promptly and ready to work.
