INTRODUCTION:

The lean trimming station is composed of three major components for completing cuts on thermoset composite panels.   There are three distinct cuts that need to completed for a final trimmed product.   Flashing on all three profiles need to be trimmed from blank panel.   After completing longitudinal cuts semicircular cuts need to be made in the profile located at the bottom of the holding fixture.   For convenience the semicircular holes will be called spuds.   The last cut that needs to be made is the cross cut.   These cuts will be made at specified locations.   In all cases the cuts are made with an 1/8 inch double diamond cutting bit.  Below are descriptions of the main cutting components.

SPUD CUTTER:

The spud cutter assembly is designed to accurately trim the small and large spuds in the 2 panels. The spud cutter is moved into position via the carriage.  Once the cutter is located in the proper location the router motor is turned on and then the pneumatic plunging device actuates causing the spud cutter to be pressed down onto the 2 panel.  The gear head motor then makes one revolution and the tool is retracted.  There are 2 large spud cutters and 2 small spud cutters.  The key features of the spud cutter system are the following:

      Pneumatic plunging device to lower cutter into position

      Custom brush set for gear head motors

      Gear head motor used to rotate router around

      Adaptable to different spud profiles by changing the spud template the router follows

CROSS CUTTER:

The cross cutter is designed to create the longitudinal cuts for the different part configurations for each panel.  The carriage moves the cross cutter assembly into place and when the cross cutter is activated the lead screw moves the router holding fixture down the track to create the cut.  The key features of the cross cutter are the following:

      Roller system for router to follow the profile of the holding fixture without using CNC control

      Linear Slide for vertical motion of router as it follows along its path

      Adjustability for different panel shapes by reconfiguring the cross cutter track that the follower bearing rides in

LONGITUDINAL CUTTER:

Each of the three panels requires four longitudinal cuts.  The longitudinal cutter provides routers located in the proper position to create the full-length cuts required for this step in the total trimming process.  The routers are moved along the length of the panel by the carriage.  The key features of the longitudinal cutter are the following:

      One pass for all 4 cuts

      Routers permanently fixed in position

      Adaptability for different profiles of panels
